Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission has been prepared as a DOCX (Microsoft Word) file using the Waypoint Submission template.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness and are presented in APA style (7th Edition).
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labelled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Opinion Pieces

Short and thought-provoking articles stating a position and drawing on facts and evidence to support it (1000 - 1500 words)

Case Studies

Articles typically describing: the organisational and historical context, technical specifications of the project, discussion of pedagogy, implementation, evaluation and limitations (maximum of 3000 words)​

Synthesis and Application

Articles will connect various theories, models, or findings, from the author and/or other authors. These articles present new ideas that contribute to practice or the discourse on advising and student development (maximum of 4000 words).

Research Articles

Longer papers which present original research findings. The article should provide a clear rationale for the study within the body of published research or policy, an overview of the research methodology adopted, a presentation of original research findings, and a discussion of those findings in relation to existing knowledge (maximum of 6000 words).​

Technology Reviews

Articles providing an independent critique or review of a technology application relevant to personal tutoring/academic advising, outlining its application for learning and teaching and its strengths and weaknesses (maximum of 1000 words)​.

Technology Review articles cannot be accepted from authors employed by the company that develops the technology, or its parent or subsidiary companies.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party. Metadata related to published articles will be shared with Crossref for the purposes of issuing Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and creating a lasting scholarly record.
